In celebration the 150th anniversary of the birth of Alfredo da Silva, Amélia de Mello Foundation, in collaboration with NOVA University, presents the Alfredo da Silva Award, an initiative that reinforces the life and legacy of the greatest Portuguese industrialist of the 20th century and distinguishes and supports scientific research projects.

In collaboration with NOVA University, through NOVAhealth's Platform, the award is intended for scientific research projects, focused on the domain of Health Systems Sustainability, contemplating several scientific areas such as social, economic, or political sustainability. The initiative aims to award scientific research projects, linked or not to academic degree, developed by researchers integrated or not in Portuguese Universities and Polytechnic Institutes.

 

The best project will be awarded a research grant of  €25,000.

On June 30th, 2021, it is the 150th anniversary of the birth of Alfredo da Silva, the greatest Portuguese industrialist of the 20th century, an essential figure within the Portuguese society and the economy, namely for his entrepreneurship and dedication to the CUF Group - Companhia União Fabril. Alfredo da Silva's leadership was decisive for the implementation of initiatives related to the transformation of the country in the 20th century. The founder of CUF built a group that included companies such as Tabaqueira, Estaleiro da Rocha Conde de Óbidos (later Lisnave), Banco Totta, and Companhia de Seguros Império. He also contributed to the development of the chemical and textile industries, naval exploration, modernized and increased urban and maritime transport, the growth of banking activity, and the promotion of the provision of health.

NOVA Health has the mission of creating value for Health through scientific production, innovative solutions, dissemination of knowledge, and promoting research collaborations between NOVA academic units, as well as with external partners whether it is in science, industry, or society.

From the molecule to global health, the Platform focuses on several strategic areas, including aging, nutrition, chronic disease, and infection, improving the value of health and care, the impact of climate change on public health, integration of care, migration, quality, patient safety, and health policies and systems.
